Hazardous Materials

PCB containing Light BallastBuilding owners, project managers, engineers and architects are responsible to manage an increasingly complex set of environmental concerns. A strong combination of construction, occupational hygiene and environmental expertise means that PLEL is prepared to assist with issues related to the presence of hazardous materials and substances. The Firm has developed the reputation as a leader in the handling and management of hazardous materials. Assignments are approached with a clear knowledge of all environmental, disposal, health and safety, and cost related issues. Services include the preparation of specifications, project design and project management.

Surveys for Hazardous Materials
PLEL assists in the identification of hazardous materials, as required to comply with various environmental and occupational health and safety regulations. The current list of hazardous materials (specifically referred to under regulation as Designated Substances by certain provinces) includes asbestos, lead, silica, mercury, arsenic, benzene, isocyanates, vinyl chloride monomer, ethylene oxide, acrylonitrile, and coke oven emissions. The requirement for hazardous materials surveys may be to facilitate project budgeting, to determine disposal and handling requirements for certain materials, or as a component of due diligence exercises. Specifications can be developed to detail requirements for the handling and disposal of regulated materials.

Hazardous MaterialsLead Paint Identification and Control
Lead, often present in older rust-resistant paints, can present a health problem during or after renovation, and may require special handling and diposal procedures. PLEL can survey for lead in paint using on-site XRF analysers, which give on-site results, or the traditional paint scrape or chip and laboratory analytical method.

PCB Identification and Control
Proper management of devices containing PCB is essential to meet regulatory requirements and to avoid environmental liabilities. PLEL assists by conducting surveys or testing programs for PCB materials. We also provide assistance with regulated registration as a generator of PCB waste and registration of the storage site. Services include the preparation of PCB management plans, and specifications to detail requirements for packaging, containment, or destruction as appropriate.
